Despite being the least experienced runner in the field, Unit Five delivered a breakout performance to win the $3 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic at the Gold Coast.
The Ciaron Maher-trained colt was expertly handled by Thomas Stockdale, proving too strong late to defeat Tornado Valley by a length, with By Choice narrowly behind in third.
It was just the second career start for the son of Supido, following an impressive debut victory at Caulfield, and his rapid rise through the ranks has now earned him more than $1.8 million in prizemoney.
Maher was full of praise for the team behind the win, singling out the contribution of his brother Declan.
“It all comes down to your team and your staff,” Maher said.
“My brother Dec has been fantastic. Being able to base ourselves here and use his staff and facilities has made a huge difference.”
The trainer said the colt’s lack of experience was never a concern.
“History is history. It’s just about presenting the horse on the day,” he said.
“They’re very young horses and still learning.”
Maher also paid tribute to Stockdale, who had ridden the colt in both career starts.
“Tommy Stockdale, unbelievable. He knows the horse inside out and made all the right decisions.”
Stockdale said the win carried extra emotion with his first child due shortly.
“My wife’s heavily pregnant back home,” he said.
“Hopefully she wasn’t jumping around too much watching that.”
