Stakes-bound mare Samangu resumes on Saturday, with trainer Grahame Begg confident her return run at Caulfield Heath will pave the way to bigger summer targets.
The lightly raced mare lines up in the Sportsbet More Places Handicap (1000m), her first start since winning at Caulfield in March.
Begg has already mapped out a potential campaign, including the W J Adams Stakes and the Oakleigh Plate.
A minor setback in early spring forced Samangu to be turned out before restarting for summer, but Begg said programming issues required a creative solution.
“We got them to change the rating of the race as there was no race for her to run in during the whole month of December,” he explained.
“She’s ready to run now … we said there was a benchmark 84, so why not make it a benchmark 90, and get a wider spread.”
Despite the race change, Samangu still carries 60.5kg, reduced to 58.5kg after Logan Bates’ claim.
Her two trials at Caulfield Heath have prepared her well, though Begg expects significant improvement second-up.
“It’s a kick off point for her,” he said.
“The 1000 metres may be a tad short first-up, especially with a horse like Beast Mode in it.
“She’s a big girl … very talented … and we’re hopefully going to get to the Oakleigh Plate with her.”
