Jamie Melham makes even bigger mark on Melbourne Cup Week

Fresh from her historic Melbourne Cup win earlier in the week, Jamie Melham continued her golden run at Flemington with a race-to-race double on Champions Day.

Melham steered Need Some Luck to victory for Peter Snowden in the Listed Fisher Stakes, before guiding Sunset Park to a strong win in the Group 2 Matriarch Stakes (2000m) for Brad Widdup.

The Cup-winning jockey said she was still overwhelmed by the week’s events.

“It still feels like I’m in a dream,” Melham said.

“It’s been so special to spend time with my family. I think I’ll only really take it in once I get home.”

Sunset Park ($17) controlled the Matriarch from the front, reversing the result of her previous meeting with She’s A Hustler and surging clear late to win by 1-1/4 lengths.

Widdup said the mare had continued to improve with each preparation.

“She’s really building a record now,” Widdup said.

“Her pedigree suggests she would only get better with time, and that’s what we’re seeing.”

Need Some Luck also broke through for stakes success after showing flashes of ability in Queensland.

“He’s been improving all the way through,” Snowden said.

The gelding ($7) defeated De Bergerac ($7.50) by 1-3/4 lengths, with heavily backed Big Swinger ($2.90) third.
