Zambardo to take on Champion mare Via Sistina

Brad Widdup is set to test Jedibeel at Flemington when the six-year-old travels south to tackle the VRC Champions Sprint (1200m) on the final day of the carnival.

The son of Savabeel has built his record entirely in New South Wales to this point, progressing through the grades and collecting Stakes wins along the way.

He captured the Listed Razor Sharp Stakes (1200m) in December before backing it up in March with victory in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m).

Jedibeel has since had three cracks at elite level sprinting, most recently finishing unplaced in the The Everest (1200m) at Randwick on October 18.

Widdup remains satisfied with how the preparation has unfolded.

“He has been really good all preparation,” Widdup said.

“He had to miss his first scheduled run, but everything from that point on has been solid. I thought he ran well in The Everest.”

The gelding was scratched from last weekend’s Russell Balding Stakes (1300m) due to a wide draw.

“It wasn’t the right setup for him,” Widdup said.

“Instead, this gives him a chance to travel and get his shot down the straight.”

Flemington’s famous straight track is an unknown, but Widdup sees reason to be hopeful.

“He has done plenty of work the Melbourne way, but you always learn more once they see the straight,” he said.

“If he gets the chance to build and finish, he’ll be strong late.”
